Nov 07, 2025Project management is the process of planning, organizing, executing, and evaluating a project. Good project management forms the backbone of every implementation or innovation. But what does ‘good’ really mean? A quick search for project management courses typically reveals two main approaches. On one hand, there are structured methodologies like Scrum or PRINCE2. On the other, the ‘soft’ aspects, where collaboration and communication skills take center stage. In every project, these hard and soft elements dance together—both are crucial.
However, there is a third, often overlooked aspect that is the key to real success: ownership! Is there someone who truly feels responsible for both the project goal and the team process? Is there a genuine connection with the project objectives, the team members, the client, and the customers? Do you take responsibility for both the successes and the challenges? Do you feel like a co-creator, adding value? Without this essential ingredient, a successful implementation or innovation is barely achievable.

Ownership is one of the most challenging topics to discuss within a team. Who dares to openly admit that they are only half-invested in a project? Often, the reasons lie in external obligations, personal interests, or a sense of ‘having to’ rather than ‘wanting to.’ Addressing ownership can feel like stepping into a hornet’s nest. Guilt, shame, fear, and social pressure all play a role, especially in hierarchical structures.
From a systemic perspective, ownership is not just a mental choice but also a deeper, energetic, and physical experience. It is tangible, both individually and collectively. It means recognizing that your contribution is part of a larger whole and respecting the roles of others. It involves taking responsibility for your position and associated tasks. Ownership exists at the boundary between ‘I’ and ‘we’ and emerges when you transcend yourself and connect with something greater.

You can be as empathetic as possible or have excellent communication skills, but without ownership, a project management model remains an empty shell. Hand on your heart: how many projects are you part of where you’re only operating at half capacity?
