𝗖𝗼𝗺𝗽𝗮𝘀𝘀𝗶𝗼𝗻 – 𝗦𝘆𝘀𝘁𝗲𝗺𝗶𝗰 𝗪𝗼𝗿𝗸 𝗶𝗻 𝗔𝗰𝘁𝗶𝗼𝗻

Compassion is more than empathy. It is the art of being present without becoming entangled. It calls us to act, yet without crossing boundaries. It also carries lightness and humour, alongside the capacity to move with sorrow, uncertainty and pain.

Viktor Frankl saw compassion not as an emotion but as freedom: the choice to remain human, whatever happens. Bert Hellinger spoke of the greater love that acknowledges what is without trying to rescue, as opposed to the smaller love that comforts yet can entangle.

From a Buddhist perspective, compassion is a state of clear awareness — seeing without judgment. Levinas described it as the ethical call of the Other, Buber as the space between I and Thou. And with Deleuze, we might say that compassion is a form of freedom, an openness to difference, where humanity takes shape again and again through action.

Compassion connects involvement with boundaries. It restores what has been disturbed without forcing anything. We see compassion as a foundation for systemic work in action: an attitude that calls for responsibility. Especially in our time, it is not enough to feel with others; it requires conscious action that does justice to the whole. Compassion is not only a word, but an embodied practice — one that allows and carries vulnerability.

What does this mean for education, technology and society?

In education, compassion invites us to slow down in a time that accelerates. It asks for space for the human experience behind knowledge. It invites teachers and students to see one another not as functions or roles, but as people in development.

For social and societal issues, compassion means the ability to see the whole — the individual, the community and the system in relation. It reminds us that change is never only technical or policy-driven, but also relational and moral. In the context of technology, compassion touches the question of how we bring consciousness into what we design. Not only what is possible, but what is right.

Compassion is not a soft value, but a guiding principle — a form of conscious action that helps preserve our humanity in turbulent times.
