In every human system of relationships – whether a partnership, friendship, family, team or organisation – patterns emerge that develop only slowly over time. On the surface, much may seem to change, yet underlying behaviour often remains remarkably constant.
In the field of change management, it is an art to work with this undercurrent and to understand which interventions truly make a difference. Over the past years, we at Compass-ion have developed perspectives and instruments that help to deepen relationships and dialogue. Improvement here means stepping out of patterns, creating connection, and learning to understand one another through both differences and common ground.
This approach resonates with recent literature on the role of conversation in change and connection, from authors such as Jon Levy, Patricia Shaw, William Isaacs and David Bohm. They emphasise that genuine change does not emerge from new structures or plans, but from the way people speak and listen to each other – with attention, respect, and awareness of what remains unspoken.
Our instruments reveal that every conversation has multiple layers, both spoken and unspoken, and that intention and energy shape the quality of contact – whether at home or in a team meeting. What matters most is not taking sides, but bringing to light what lies beneath the words. This creates space for a shared experience of what a good relationship can be, between individuals or within teams.
Within Compass-ion, we have developed three practical tools to support this process: Communicating with Respect, the Partnership Wheel and the Implementation and Innovation Radar. They help to make conversations more open, acknowledge differences, and naturally strengthen collaboration. These tools are easy to use and deliver immediate, tangible results.
